A charity run and walk of around 20 miles to raise funds for the Railway Children charity.
The event will be based beside the Fox House pub, which is 3 miles east of Hathersage, and 8 miles south west of Sheffield, on the A6187. Parking is at roadside, between the pub and the end of Houndkirk Road byway, as shown on the mini-map below. It that is insufficient, additional parking is available on Stony Ridge Road (where the "A625" is written on the map). Please don't use the Fox House pub car park, at least until after the race.
As shown on the map below, Registration table is at the end of Houndkirk Road byway, and Toilets are adjacent to the pub.
The control points are shown on the Route Map . A suggested route is highlighted in yellow. The distance is actually slightly shorter than 20 miles - probably 31km / 19 miles. It has around 1000m of climb. There are great views along the upper Derwent Valley, and off Stanage and Burbage edges.
Control descriptions are available, which include the grid references. A Suggested Route description is available. Paper copies of the control descriptions and the route description will be available to anyone who requires them at the event.
A new event in 2009, the Peaks Challenge 20 is a challenge event open to runners and walkers. It will take place in the beautiful Derbyshire countryside around the Derwent Valley, between the villages of Bamford in the north and Baslow to the south. The start and finish will be near Hathersage. The map below shows the event area – click the map for a larger version.
Check points (controls) must be visited in the correct order, but you may choose the route between them. This will require some navigational ability. A suggested route will be provided, but other (possibly better) routes will be possible. The controls, and suggested route, will be published online 3 days before the event. Whichever route you take it will be hilly, but the views will be worth it!
At the event you will be provided with a set of control descriptions, which will list the grid reference of each control, and describe its location. The suggested route will also be displayed. A written description of the suggested route will be provided if you require it.
You must follow the Countryside Code at all times. Except where Access Land allows, you may not cross private land and you must remain on paths, bridleways or roads at all times.
The run will be a mass start race, starting at 10:30am. Expected winning time will be around 2.5 hours. Walkers may start at any time between 8:30am and 10am, but must return to the finish by 5pm. All participants must return to the finish, whether or not you visit all controls - failure to do so may result in a search party being sent to look for you.
Entries are £8 per senior, £5 per junior or full-time student. Proceeds from the event go to the Railway Children charity.
Entries are available online here: Fabian4 online entry
If entering as a walker just choose the “walk” category when entering. To enter the run choose the appropriate category for your age and sex:
Alternatively some entries on the day will be possible, at £10 per person, up to the entry limit. Walkers may participate individually, or as a small group with one e-card. If you enter as a group you may choose to make an additional donation at the time of entry (according to your group size).
All under 18s must be accompanied by an adult and must declare their age on their entry.
Competitors will be timed at controls by using a SpotIdent e-card. You may use your own e-card if you have one, or hire one at the start for £1. Results for all participants will be published online immediately after the event. If you hire an e-card you are responsible for its safe return.
Some (but not all) controls will be marshalled. You should not rely on marshals for route directions, or for your own safety.
Refreshments will be provided at the finish. If the weather is hot we will also endeavour to provide water at an intermediate control. You should bring your own supplies of water and food according to your needs during the event.
Runners will be eligible for prizes in each category, according to the number of entrants. Certificates of completion will be issued to walkers if requested.
By entering this event you acknowledge that:
You are responsible for carrying suitable clothing, refreshments and equipment for the event. As a guide this may include a map, map bag, compass, whistle, waterproof clothing, sun block, mobile phone.
Final details about the event, including parking arrangements and any special instructions will be published online, and emailed to participants who have entered online.
Railway Children was founded in 1996 with the following objective: 'The relief of children and young persons under 25 years of age who are in conditions of need, hardship or distress, anywhere in the world and in particular those who are living on the streets’.
Since then Railway Children has worked with thousands of vulnerable children and young people living alone and at risk on the streets. During the last year alone 25,571 children and young people living in UK, India, Tanzania and Kenya have benefited from their work.
The event is organised by a team of railway industry staff. Contact details for the organiser:
